Japan's Volcanoes Flashcards
Destructive Plate Boundary's Textbook Page 8-9
Japan is prone to earthquakes and eruptions, it has how many active volcanoes?
118 active volcanoes, which is 10% of all in the world.
What is the ring of fire?
A band of Volcanoes, including those in Japan, surrounding the Pacific Ocean.
How many tectonic plates is Japan lying on?
4, they are:
- Eurasian
- North American
- Pacific
- Philippine
The Mariana trench lies close to Japan, what is special about this?
It is the deepest ocean part on earth, over 2,000 metres deeper than Mount Everest.
When do destructive boundaries occur?
When tectonic plates move towards each other and collide.
What happens if:
- Two Continental plates collide?
They are both buoyant and so cannot sink into the mantle. As a result, compression forces the plates to collide and form mountains.
What happens if:
- Oceanic and Continental plates collide?
The denser, Oceanic plate is subducted and sinks under the Continental plate into the earth’s mantle, where it is recycled. Earthquakes, fold mountains and volcanoes occur.
