Q

Why would filtered water be considered a pure substance, but ocean water be considered a mixture?

A

Because filter water filters out the extra mineral from the ocean. Like salt, sand etc. but water itself is a pure substance

Q

What is the difference between a physical and chemical change. Give an example each.

A

Physical changes; materials change it’s shape or state but it keeps it’s IDENTITY. No new substance. Materials will be the same as it started with, even if it looks different. Ex. Rip paper apart. Turn water to ice.
Chemical change: one type of matter changes to PRODUCE ONE OR MORE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MATTER. The term chemical property refers to the ability of a material to take part in a chemical change. Ex. Tree into paper, or egg sugar flour milk bakes to cake.

Q

What’s the difference between a qualitative and a quantitative property of matter? Give example of both.

A

Qualitative: properties you can sense or described.
Quantitative: properties you can count or measure with number.
Ex. Cup of water etc.

Q

Difference between heterogenous mixture and a homogenous mixture. Give two examples each.

A

Heterogenous-different throughout
Ex. Cereal with raisins, pizza, pulpy orange juice
Homogenous same throughout
Ex. Gatorade, Apple juice, windex

Q

Define element and compound. What is the difference between 2. Give an example of each

A

Element- pure substance composed of one type of atom WHICH CANNOT BE BROKEN DOWN or SEPERATED INTO SIMLAR SUBSTANCE. Ex. Iron, gold

Q

What’s the difference between a suspension and an emulsion. Give an example of each.

A

A suspension Is when it is easy to see the separation of the mixture and a emulsion is when a suspension had been added to allow the suspension the mixed.
Suspension ex. Oil and vinegar
Emulsion ex. Paint

16
Q

Difference between a reversible and non reversible change?

A

A reversible change is that it can be undone a non reversible change is something it cannot be undone.

17
Q

Define solvent and solute. Using kool aid as an example, what is the solvent and solute.

A

Solute- substance that dissolves aka kool aid powder part

Solvent- substance in which the solute dissolves aka water/liquid

18
Q

What’s a pure substance?

A

Material that is the SAME THROUGHOUT and is composed of only ONE TYPE OF PARTICLE.

19
Q

List 4 ideas of the particle idea model of matter.

A
  1. All matter is made up if particles that are much to small to be seen
2 have empty spaces between them
    3 always in motion
4 higher temp moves faster than particles at lower temp
20
Q

Pick an object and describe at least 2 qualitative and 2 quantitative properties

A

Cup with water- length, measure of water. Feels wet, tastes like water.
