Q

What are meristems?

A

These are the dividing cells of the plant that give rise to various tissues.

They are kind of like the stem cells of plants.

Q

What are the apical meristems responsible for?

What do they produce?

A

They are responsible for primary growth - growth in length.

They produce the primary tissue including:

  1. Dermal Tissue
  2. Ground Tissue
  3. Vascular Tissue

Q

What are herbaceous plants?

What is unique about them in reference to their growth?

Q

What are the lateral meristems responsible for?

What do they produce?

A

They are responsible for secondary growth - growth in width.

They produce the secondary tissue including:

  1. Cork Cambium
  2. Vascular Cambium

Q

What type of tissue is the epidermis?

Above the ground, what is it covered by?

What are the functions?

A

It is a part of the dermal tissue

Above the ground it is covered by the cuticle.

Functions:

  1. Protection from pathogens
  2. Protection from water loss

Q

What are trichomes?

What is their function?

A

They are hair-like extensions of epidermal cells.

Functions:

  1. They can act as a deterrent
  2. They can help prevent water loss (the trichomes block the breeze)

Q

What are the stomates and the guard cells of the dermal tissue?

What are their respective functions?

A

Stomates - opening in the dermal tissue

Guard cells - these are the cells around the stomates that regulate the opening and closing of pores.

They both function in gas exchange in unique ways, as well as preventing water loss.

Q

What does the cork cambium become? Is this primary or secondary growth?
