1603 Treaty of London
England made peace with Catholic Spain to improve relations.
1618 – 48 Thirty Years War
Begun through an Election of German Catholic Prince (Frederick of the Palatinate, James’ daughter’s husband) to be King of Bohemia, which is usually given to the Holy Roman Emperor, however Protestants rebelled, therefore James’ had reasons to interfere being a Protestant King as well as family reasons, however preferred to negotiate peace.
1623 Spanish Match
The proposed marriage between Prince Charles (James’ son) and Spanish Princess Maria Anna of Spain to allow an alliance between Spain and Britain
1623 Madrid Trip
Charles and Buckingham went to Spain to complete the Spanish Match and due to their poor treatment from the Catholic court, they returned with an anti-Spanish war stance.
1624 Charles’ marriage with French Princess
An agreement was signed for Charles to marry French Henrietta Maria, aligning Britain with France, Spain’s main rival.
1624 James’ anti-Spanish stance
James had been converted to a more assertive anti-Spanish stance on war, however Parliament reluctant to provide the funds for the War as it was not in the Crown’s financial interest.
