Key favourite of Charles I
Key favourite of Charles was George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham who was also a favourite of his father, James. Buckingham was allowed a dominant role in management of royal finance, however, was not popular amongst parliament.
1615 Buckingham made Gentleman of the Bedchamber
Access to the monarch’s private compartments at the centre of the court increasing in his influence over Charles.
1626 Removal of Earl of Arundel
Anyone within Parliament, including Earl of Arundel (Thomas Howard), who were not supporters of Buckingham were dismissed and arrested.
1628 Remonstrance
Buckingham was attacked by MP’s in a remonstrance (protestation) such as Edward Coke and John Eliot calling him “the cause of all our miseries”.
1628 Buckingham’s assassination
Buckingham was stabbed in the chest by soldier John Felton which was accompanied by celebration across the country. Charles blamed Parliament for their negative portrayal of Buckingham.
