Q

1625 Failure at Cadiz

A

Charles’ first intervention in the anti-Spanish war was disastrous as troops sent for the German mercenary (professional soldiers fighting in foreign army) were recruited by force, with no training and limited equipment. 4000/6000 died of disease and starvation. The English failed to capture the Spanish fleet or port, Cadiz and lost troops due to lack of food. This meant Charles had to call another Parliament for finance and Parliament blamed Buckingham for this, as Lord High Admiral, however Charles believed Parliament were to blame.

Q

1627 Failure at La Rochelle

A

Buckingham as Lord High Admiral was in charge of Charles’ plan to aid the Protestant Huguenot rebellion against the French monarchy however was deemed a failure due to Buckingham’s failure of a seize at Ile de Re, just off of La Rochelle as well as the fact the King had already made peace with the Huguenots therefore was pointless. Buckingham only returned with around 3000/ 7800 English troops.
