IVDD Flashcards
1
Q
IVDD
A
= intervertebral disc disease
2
Q
How is IVDD categorised?
A
- Hansen type I = extrusion
- Hansen type II = protrusion
- Hansen type III = ANNPE = acute-non-compressive nucleus pulpous extrusion
3
Q
What is Hansen type I / extrusion? Onset?
A
- release of nucleus pulposus by rupture through the annular ring
- usually a sudden onset pathology, but there may have been previous damage or progressive damage to the annular ring
- this will result in either compressive, concussive or both pathologies, and is usually sudden onset (but you may get multiple episodes)
4
Q
What is Hansen type II / protrusion? Onset?
A
- the nucleus pulposus remains in place and the annular ring bulges
- this will result in compressive pathology and is usually progressive in onset
5
Q
What is Hansen type III / ANNPE
A
- concussive injury to the spinal cord secondary to acute extrusion with no compression
- since there are multiple discs the pathology can often be multilevel
