• Hansen type I = extrusion
• Hansen type II = protrusion
• Hansen type III = ANNPE = acute-non-compressive nucleus pulpous extrusion

What is Hansen type I / extrusion? Onset?

Answer 3

• release of nucleus pulposus by rupture through the annular ring
• usually a sudden onset pathology, but there may have been previous damage or progressive damage to the annular ring
• this will result in either compressive, concussive or both pathologies, and is usually sudden onset (but you may get multiple episodes)

What is Hansen type II / protrusion? Onset?

• the nucleus pulposus remains in place and the annular ring bulges
• this will result in compressive pathology and is usually progressive in onset

• concussive injury to the spinal cord secondary to acute extrusion with no compression
• since there are multiple discs the pathology can often be multilevel
