DM - what does it stand for? What was it previously known as?
A
- DM = degenerative myelopathy
- previously known as CDRM (chronic degenerative radiculomyelopathy)

Prevalence
A
- common in the German Shepherd dog

Presentation
A
- chronic progressive hindlimb ataxia
- usually occurs at 6-9y
- usually progresses over 9months to a stage requiring euthanasia on grounds of QoL
- non-painful condition

Genetic component & gene screening
A
- there is a genetic component to DM with a link to the SOD1 (superoxide dismutase) gene
- gene screening results in a number of false postiive cases and so can’t be used as a definitive diagnostic test or definitive predictor of development of DM

Diagnosis
A
- by exclusion (IVDD protrusion)
- no signs yet identified on MRI

Tx
A
- no effective therapy
- physiotherapy has been shown to slow the rate of deterioration but not prevent
