Presentation

A
  • chronic progressive hindlimb ataxia
  • usually occurs at 6-9y
  • usually progresses over 9months to a stage requiring euthanasia on grounds of QoL
  • non-painful condition

Genetic component & gene screening

A
  • there is a genetic component to DM with a link to the SOD1 (superoxide dismutase) gene
  • gene screening results in a number of false postiive cases and so can’t be used as a definitive diagnostic test or definitive predictor of development of DM

  • by exclusion (IVDD protrusion)
  • no signs yet identified on MRI
