IV Therapy - Electrolytes Flashcards
What are the four main advantages of IV therapy?
- Allows or maintains an emergency access to the circulatory system)
-Bypasses the GI tract - Offers a route of administration when other routes are unavailable
- pt is NPO - Therapeutic blood levels of medications are maintained with continue fluids.
- Control the rate of administration
what are some disadvantages of IV therapy? (8)
- Damage : to the vein
- Overload : fluid
- Overdose : medication
- Infection/sepsis- Use proper technique as well as maintaining an access (watch your dressing)
- Patient Activity: Decrease in patient activity due to IV pump
- Incompatibility: of fluid/medication
- Adverse Reactions
- Electrolyte Imbalance: keep a close eye on labs
What is Phlebitis?
inflammation of the vein
what are some things that can cause phlebitis? (5)
- Poor aseptic technique
- High osmolarity infusions
- Improperly diluted medications
- Incorrect cannula gauge
- Too rapid infusion rate
Signs and sypmtoms of phlebitis? 4
- Tenderness
- Redness
- Heat
- Edema
how do you prevent phlebitis? 4
- Rotate insertion site
- Dilute properly
- Slow infusion rate
- Aseptic technique
what are your interventions for phlebitis? 3
- Stop drug infusion
- Remove cannula
- Apply warm compress
what is thrombophlebitis?
Formation of clot and inflammation in the vein
Usually occurs after phlebitis
what are some things that can cause thrombophlebitis? 4
- injury to vein
- infection
- chemical irritation
- prolonged use of the same vein
what are the signs and symptoms of thrombophlebitis? 4
1.Tenderness
2. Redness
3. Heat
4. Edema
what do you do to prevent thrombophlebitis? 4
- Smooth Insertion
- Asepsis
- Rotation of insertion sites
- Monitor site frequently
what are the interventions you will do if your patient has thrombophlebitis?
- Stop Drug infusion
- Remove cannula (may culture tip)
- Apply warm compress
what are some things that can cause an air embolism? 5
- Solution container runs dry
- Improper priming of tubing
- Loose connections
- Poor technique in dressing and tubing changes for central lines
- Improper removal of central lines
signs and symptoms of an air embolism? 8
- Dyspnea, unequal breath sounds
- Cyanosis
- Hypotension
- Weak, rapid pulse
- Loss of consciousness
- Chest, shoulder, or low back pain
- Shock
- Death
how do you treat an air embolism ? 8
- Immediately clamp IV/STOP infusion
- Call for help
- Place patient in 4.Trendelenburg on left side
- Valsalva maneuver contraindicated
- Administer Oxygen
- Monitor vital signs
- Have Emergency equipment ready
