IUGR Flashcards
What is ‘small for gestational age’?
Foetal weight (on USS) or abdominal cisrumference below the 10th centile for gestational age
What is IUGR?
SGA due to a pathology reducing the amount of nutrients + oxygen being delivered to the foetus
What other signs may indicate IUGR?
Reduced liquor volume, abnormal doppler, reduced foetal movement, abnormal CTG
RFs for IUGR
HTN Pre-eclapmsia Diabetes Smoking/ alcohol Infection
Management of women with a major RF (2)
Serial USS measurement of foetal size
Assessment of wellbeing with umbilical artery doppler
When should umbilical artery doppler be done from?
From 26-28 weeks
or from 20 weeks if >3 minor RFs
Findings in placental function doppler
Pulsatility index, resistance index, end diastolic flow
Assesses foetal artery blood flow in the umbilical artery
PI + RI are measures of resistance, so should be LOW
EDF should be positive
Principles of IUGR management
Find + manage the underlying cause (e.g. pre-eclampsia)
When are IUGR babies delivered?
Usually <37 weeks
