A
Sangiovese is the most widely planted varietal (71,500 hectares). It is responsible for some of Italy’s best wine: Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano , and Brunello di Montalcino.
The Montepulciano grape comes second, covering 86,000 hectares.
Catarratto is the most widely planted white grape at 89,000 hectares.
