Venetian Empire:

  1. Venetians discovered how to evaporate water to make sea salt
  2. Used salt for trade
  3. Created a monopoly on salt
  4. Salt needs strong winds and hot climate to evaporate
  5. Venetians traded salt for other spices such as pepper.
  6. Christoper Columbus originally was in search of pepper. Did not get funding from Italy, asked Geneva for funding first, received funding from Spain.
