Q

ALPHA BIAS

A

tendency to exaggerate the differences between men and women suggesting there are real and enduring differences between the two sexes
Consequences are that theorists devalue one gender in comparison to the other typically women

Q

EXAMPLE OF ALPHA BIAS- PSYCHODYNAMIC

A

psych expl for offending behavior suggests criminality occurs due to deviant superego
according to freud since women dont experience castration anx, they under less pressure less need to identify w morals of same sex parent compared to boys
suggests females are less moral than males

Q

BETA BIAS

A

minimizes differences between m+w
often occurs when female ppts not included in research process but it is assumed that research findings apply equally to both sexes

Q

EXAMPLES OF BETA BIAS- F O F/ TEND BEFRIEND

A

early research into f or f based on male animals bc female hormones fluctuate.
F or F assumed to be universal response to threat
TAYLOR- suggest females exhibit tend bef response governed by oxytocin+ reduces f or f response
evolved response for caring for young

Q

ANDROCENTRISM -male centred

A

Alpha n beta bias are consequences of androcentrism
Psych has traditionally been a subject dominated by males
This leads to female beh being misunderstood+pathologised
e.g PMS has been criticised by some as being a social construction, which trivialises female
emotion, particularly anger
but male anger is seen as a logical response to
external pressures (Brescoll and Uhlman)

Q

A03- GENDER BIAS IN RESEARCH

A

If theories and studies are gender biased, the research may
find differences between genders but it may not be the genders that differ but the methods used to test or observe them.
Rosenthal - male
experimenters are more pleasant and encouraging to female participants and subsequently
they perform better in tasks/male participants appeared to perform less well.

Q

A03 GB; LAB EXP MAY BE AN EXAMPLE OF INSTITUTIONALISED SEXISM IN PSYCH

A

Research likely to be conducted by males disadv females
male researchers may expect female ppt to be irrational n unable to complete complex tasks- NICOLSON
which means they underperform
= inst structures n methods may produce gender biased findings

Q

A03 ADV BETA BIAS

A

Beta bias has allowed women greater access to educational and
occupational opportunities. However Hare pointed out that arguing
for equality draws attention away from women’s special needs
e.g equal
parenting ignores the biological demands of pregnancy, childbirth and the special needs of
women.
this suggests that some elements of beta bias may actually
disadvantage women.

Q

CULTURAL RELATIVISM

A

view that behaviour, morals, standards and values cannot be
judged properly unless they are viewed in the context of the culture in which they originate.

Q

Example of cultural relativism

A

Milgram’s study into obedience was originally conducted American participants
replicated using Spanish students
over 90% obedience rates in Spanish students
This suggests that Milgram’s original results were
specifically bound to American cultures.

15
Q

ethnocentrism
superiority of own culture

A

A form of cultural bias
in psych research this may be communicated thru a view that any behaviour that does not conform to a western standard is deficient or underdeveloped

16
Q

EXAMPLE OF ETHNOCENTRISM
AINSWORTH STRANGE SITCH

A

Ains suggested ideal secure attachment was defined by a baby showing moderate distress when left aline by mother figure

led to misinterpretation of child rearing praticses in other countries whcih deviated from US norm, e..g japan rarely left alone likely to be classified as insec attached as showed distress on separation

17
Q

ALPHA BIAS IN CULTURAL RESEARCH

A

culture refers to the assumption that there are real n enduring differences between cultural groups.
E.G the distinction that is often
made between individualistic and collectivist cultures. expect individualistic
cultures to be less conformist as they are less orientated towards group norms and value the needs of the group over the individual
Takano and Osaka reviewed 15
studies that compared the US and Japan in terms of collectivist/individualism
found 14/15 studies did not support the view about differences in
conformity.
less of a collectivist/individualist divide in an inc global world.

18
Q

beta bias in culture

A

minimises the diff
assuming all the same+ reasonable to use same theories for all cultures
e.g use IQ tests to
study intelligence assume view of intelligence applies equally to all cultures.
Western societies
see intelligence as something within the individual whereas in a collectivist culture
intelligence is a functional relationship
that non-western people may appear less intelligent.
“imposed etic” approach, where a test is made in
one group and then imposed on another.

19
Q

5 types of determinism

A

hard determinism
soft
environmental
psychic
biological

20
Q

hard determinism

A

forces outside our control always causes behaviour
incompatible with free will
biological ln behaviourist

21
Q

soft determinism

A

beh caused by env or biological makeup but only to a certain extent
an element of free will
