Isoproterenol mechanism of action
Stimulates beta1- and beta2-receptors resulting in
relaxation of bronchial, GI, and uterine smooth muscle
increased heart rate and contractility, vasodilation
of peripheral vasculature
Indications for Isoproterenol
Bronchoconstriction that is seen in asthma
COPD & chronic bronchitis, Used parenterally in ventricular arrhythmia due to A-V nodal block, temporary use in third degree A-V block until pacemaker insertion
Contraindications for Isoproterenol
Angina, pre-existing cardiac arrhythmias,
tachycardia or A-V block caused by cardiac glycoside
Intoxication, allergy to sulfites or isoproterenol
Adverse effects for Isoproterenol
Insomnia, restlessness, dry throat, xerostomia
flushing of the face or skin, ventricular arrhythmias
Nervousness, anxiety, dizziness, headache, diaphoresis
trembling, tremor, weakness, N/V
Precautions for Isoproterenol
Sympathomimetic agents may cause headaches
and elevate blood pressure, general anesthetics may
cause cardiac arrhythmias
Dose for bronchodilation of Isoproterenol
Inhalation: Metered dose inhaler: 1 - 2
metered doses 4 - 6 times/day
Dose for Shock of Isoproterenol
I.V.: 0.5 - 5 mcg/minute; adjust according to
pt’s response
