Isomers Flashcards

1
Q

Structural Isomers

A

Atoms connected in a different order (functional groups, position, change)
Have different names
Two types are chain and positional
Chain isomers have different branching arrangemenets
Positional isomers have a different position of the functional group

Q

Stereoisomers

A

Atoms connected in the same order
Geometric isomers: Carbon single bonds rotate freely to allow these isomers (cis and trans), but there is restricted rotation around a double bond
Enantiomers: non super imposable (mirror images)

Q

Condensed molecular formula

A

The formula where the symbols of atoms are listed in order as they appear in the molecule’s structure. Side groups in brackets
E.g. CH3CH2CH3 for propane
