Irradiation, Leukoreduction, Washing Flashcards
Irradiated Products:
- Amount to midplane
- Minimum dose to any portion
- 25 Gy (2500 cGy) - Midplane
- 15 Gy (1500 cGy) - Any portion
How does irradiation affect RBC storage/expiration?
28 days or the original outdate
-Whichever is sooner
What is the indication for product Irradiation?
Prevention of TA-GVHD
What is the usual method of leukoreduction?
Filtration
To be labeled as leukoreduced, 95% of tested units must contain:
- RBCs/Apheresis platelets
- Whole Blood derived platelets
RBCs/Apheresis Platelets:
-<5x10^6 WBCs
Whole Blood Platelets:
-<8.3x10^5
The leukoreduced Red Cell unit must retain ___% of the original Red Cells (whole blood derived) or ___ g of hemoglobin (Pheresis units).
> 85%
51 g
Leukoreduction Indications. (4)
Prevention of:
- HLA alloimmunization
- Febrile, nonhemolytic, TxRxns
- CMV transmission
- Transfusion Related Immune Modulation (TRIM)
T/F: Leukoreduction is NOT effecting in preventing TA-GVHD.
True
What does Washing products remove?
Plasma
-Resuspended in normal saline
What is the primary indication of Washed products? (2)
-Prevention of recurrent or Severe Allergic Reactions
(IgA defecient recipients)
-Transfusing neonates with cellular products bearing incompatible plasma
What is the shelf-life of washed RBCs?
-Platelets
- 24 hours (washed RBCs)
- 4 hours (washed platelets)
