Iron Flashcards
what two processes is iron involved in in the body?
oxygen transport electron transport (production of ATP)
where is the majority of body iron found?
in haem
what is haem made of?
porphyrin ring and iron
where does iron absorption occur?
mainly in the duodenum
what dietary factors can enhance iron absorption?
haem iron
ascorbic acid
alcohol
why is haem iron more readily absorbed?
it has its own dedicated transporter
what effect does ascorbic acid have on iron?
reduces it to its Fe2+ form - ready to be absorbed
what dietary factors can inhibit iron absorption?
tannins found in tea
phytates in things like cereal, nuts and seeds
calcium
what enzyme prepares iron for absorption and how?
duodenal cytochrome B
reduces ferric iron to ferrous iron
what transporter transports iron into the enterocytes?
DMT-1
aka divalent metal transporter 1
what protein facilitates iron export from the enterocyte?
ferroportin
what protein regulates iron absorption?
hepcidin
what is the major negative regulator of iron uptake?
hepcidin
what causes increased production of hepcidin by the liver?
increased iron load
inflammation
how does hepcidin regulate iron absorption?
binds to and degrades ferroportin
this traps iron in duodenal cells and macrophages
