What is ipratropium bromide?
Ipratropium bromide (250 microg/1 mL nebule) is an antimuscarinic agent which promotes bronchodilation by inhibiting cholinergic bronchomotor tone.
Onset - 1.5 to 3 min
Duration - 4-6 hours
Half-life - 3 hours
Hepatic metabolism, excreted by the kidneys.
Indications for ipratropium bromide?
- Moderate bronchospasm (unresponsive to initial QAS salbutamol NEB)
- Severe bronchospasm
Contraindications for ipratropium bromide?
- Allergy/ADR
- Patients less than 1 yr
Precautions for ipratropium bromide?
- Glaucoma
Side effects of ipratropium bromide?
- Dilated pupils
- Dry mouth
- Palpitations
What is the dose of ipratropium bromide for an adult?
500 microg NEB
Repeated at 20 min intervals
Total max dose 1.5 mg
MUST BE MIXED WITH SALBUTAMOL NEB
What is the dose of ipratropium bromide for a paediatric?
1 to 5 years - 250 microg NEB
Repeated at 20 min intervals
Total max dose 750 microg
> 6 years - 500 microg
Repeated at 20 min intervals
Total max dose 1.5 mg
MUST BE MIXED WITH SALBUTAMOL NEB
