What is ibuprofen?
A
Ibuprofen (200mg tablet) is a non-selective NSAID that inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins resulting in analgesic, antipyretic & anti-inflammatory actions.
Onset - 15 mins
Duration - 4 to 6 hours
Half-life - 2 hours
Metabolised by the liver and excreted by the kidneys.

Indications for ibuprofen?
A
- Moderate pain due to acute inflammation & tissue injury

Contraindications for ibuprofen?
A
- Allergy/ADR to any NSAID or aspirin
- Concurrent NSAID therapy
- Current GI bleeding or peptic ulcers
- Dehydration and or hypovolaemia
- Renal impairment
- NSAID induced asthma
- Heart failure
- Pregnancy
- Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) therapy
- Patients under 13 yrs or over 65 yrs
- Patients taking anticoagulant medications
- Diuretic treatment

A
- Asthma
- Hepatic dysfunction
- History of GI bleeding or peptic ulcers

- Nausea
- Dyspepsia
- GI bleeding
- Dizziness

What is the ibuprofen dose for an adult?
A
200-400mg PO
Must not be administered within 6 hours of previous ibuprofen administration
