What is aspirin?
A
Aspirin (tablet 300mg) is an antiplatelet medication which inhibits platelet aggregation.
Primarily excreted by the kidneys.
Onset: 10 min
Duration: 1 week
Half-life: 3.2 hrs

Indications for aspirin?
A
- Suspected ACS
2. Acute cardiopulmonary oedema (APO)

Contraindications for aspirin?
A
- Allergy/ADR to aspirin or any NSAID
- Chest pain associated with psychostimulant OD
- Bleeding or clotting disorders (e.g. haemophillia)
- Current GI bleeding or peptic ulcers
- Patients under 18yrs

Precautions for aspirin?
A
- Possible aortic aneurysm or any other condition that may require surgery
- Pregnancy
- History of GI bleeding or peptic ulcers
- Concurrent anticoagulant therapy (e.g. warfarin)

Side effects of aspirin?
A
- Epigastric pain/discomfort
- Nausea/vomiting
- Gastritis
- GI bleeding
- NSAID induced bronchospasm

What is the dose for aspirin?
A
300 mg PO
Chewed & swallowed with a small sip of water
