Ethnorelative stages
Acceptance, Adaptation, Integration
Intercultural sensitivity model: 6 stages
Denial, defense, minimization, acceptance, adaptation, integration
Denial
Think that all the cultures are the same, not aware of cultural differences
Defense
Are aware of cultural differences, but in a dualistic them-us way -> ‘‘our culture and all the others’’, other cultures are seen as threatening and inferior
Minimization
We are aware of cultural differences, but mainly of superficial ones. We see our own norms and values as universal and interpreted other through our own cultural glasses -> judge other’s behavior according to what is right or wrong according to own culture
Acceptance
We are able to recognize and accept cultural differences in values and behavior. In this phase we see cultural difference as a source of new ideas and solutions to problems
Adaption
Evaluate another culture from the frame of reference of the other culture and adjust our behavior appropriately
Integration / Intercultural Competence
In this stage we are able to practice multiple frames of reference, or bi-cultural frames of reference. You know your limits and it does not confuse you
The more cultures, the more ideas
Acceptance
We are all the same
Denial
I always shake hands when I meet people, but she prefers not to, so I won’t impose my handshake
Adaption
Shall we give tham language lessons?
Minimization
They are taking away our jobs
Defense
I feel at home at many places
Integration/ Intercultural Competence
