Ionisation Energy Graph Flashcards
1
Q
What does graph of successive ionisation energies show?
A
Shell structure
2
Q
Why are there big jumps in ionisation energy in graph?
A
Big jumps happen when new shell is broken into - electron is being removed from shell closer to nucleus
3
Q
How do you find out which group an element belongs to from graph?
A
Count how many electrons are removed before 1st big jump to find group number
4
Q
How do you find out electronic structure of elements from graph?
A
From right to left, count how many points there are before each big jump to find out how many electrons are in each shell, starting with the first
