Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What are compound ions made up of?
Groups of atoms with an overall charge
Ionic bonding
Electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
What are ionic crystals?
Giant lattices of ions
Structure of sodium chloride
Giant ionic lattice
What do ionic bonding form between?
Metal & non-metal
4 properties of ionic compounds
1) Conduct electricity when molten - not when solid
2) High melting points
3) Dissolve in water
4) Brittle crystals
Conduct electricity when molten - not when solid
Ions in liquid are free to move. In solid, ions are fixed in position by strong ionic bonds
Why do giant ionic lattices have high melting points?
Ions held together by strong electrostatic forces which take lots of energy to break
How do lattices dissolve in water?
Water molecules are polar. Charged parts pull ions away from lattice, causing it to dissolve
Brittle crystals
A small displacement causes contact between ions of the same charge. Like charges repel and so the structure shatters
