Ionic Compounds Flashcards
Does tap water conduct electricity? Why?
Yes due to its minerals
How is a moving charge generated in a wire?
Moving Charge is generated from the electrons moving in a current
How come sodium chloride conducts electricity only when in water?
In sodium chloride ions can’t move, however when water is added the particles can move in the current?
What two things must a substance have to be able to conduct electricity?
Must have charged particles {e.g. Electrons/ions
Charged particles must be free to move
When (aq) is written before the compound, what does this mean?
Means it is in a liquid
What four things are good about ion models?
Rigid structure
Forms a cubic shape
Ions are organised
Positive next to negative in all directions
What three things are bad about ion models?
Spaces between the ions due to them being different sizes
There will not be stick like bonds between the ions in real life
Model does not show vibrations of ions in the lattice
What are two features of an ionic lattice?
Has a regular arrangement of ions and is held together by ionic bonds
What does ate mean in a compound name?
Oxygen present
What does ide mean in a compound name?
Oxygen not present
