Ionic Compounds Flashcards
What structure do ionic compounds have?
A giant ionic lattice structure- the ions form a closely packed regular lattice arrangement and there are very strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositley charged ions in all directions of the lattice.
What would a sodium chloride ball and stick model look like?
List the properties of ionic compounds(3)
*high melting points and boiling points- there are many strong ionic bonds between the ions as it takes alot of energy to overcome this attraction.
*When they’re soild the ions are held in place so the compounds can’t conduct electricity.
* When ionic compounds are dissolved in water or are melted they are free to move in the soloution so they can conduct electricity and carry electric charge
