Ionic Bonding Flashcards

1
Q

What is ionic bonding?

A

When a non metal and and a metal react together, the metal atom loses electrons to form a positively charged ion and the non metal gains these electrons to form a negatively charged ion. These oppositley charged ions are strongly attracted to one another by electrostatic forces.

Q

How do magnesium and oxygen react to make magnesium oxide?

A

The unstable magnesium atom gives up it’s 2 outer electrons forming a magnesium ion. The unstable oxygen atom gains these electrons forming an oxide ion. These oppositley charged ions are strongly attracted to one another by electrostatic forces. Through this way of ionic bonding, sodium and chlorine form sodium chloride.
