Covalent Bonding Flashcards
What is covalent bonding?
•When non metal atoms bond together and share pairs of electrons to make covalent bonds.
•The positively charged nuclei of the bonded atoms are attracted to the to the shared pair of electrons by electrostatic forces.
• Covalent bonding happens in the compound of non metals.
What does a dot and cross diagram for covalent bonding look like?
•Shared electrons are drawn in the overlap between the 2 orbitals of two atoms
What would the displayed formula of covalent bonds include?
they show how atoms are connected in large molecules
What are some advantages of displayed formula diagrams?
•it shows which atoms are which element
•shows single and double bonds
What are some advantages to dot and cross diagrams
•they are useful for showing which atoms the electrons in covalent bonds come from
What are some disadvantages of the dot and cross diagram ?
• they don’t show the relative sizes of the atoms
•they don’t show how the atoms are arranged in space
What are some disadvantages of displayed formula?
•they don’t show outer electrons that are not in the bonds
•they don’t give accurate information of the shape of the molecule
