Ion Effects Flashcards

Q
What is the strategy of predicting pH of salt solutions
A
- separate salt into anion and cation
- determine acid base properties of the ions (see if acid or base, strong or weak
- if both neutral solution neutral (pH 7)
- if one ion neutral, acid base properties are determined by other ion
- if one is acidic and the other basic, acidity is determined by if ka or kb is larger
- ka>kb acidic and vice versa
