Q

What is the strategy of predicting pH of salt solutions

A
  • separate salt into anion and cation
  • determine acid base properties of the ions (see if acid or base, strong or weak
  • if both neutral solution neutral (pH 7)
  • if one ion neutral, acid base properties are determined by other ion
  • if one is acidic and the other basic, acidity is determined by if ka or kb is larger
  • ka>kb acidic and vice versa
