Investigating Respiration Flashcards
How do you measure rate of respiration using a respirometer ?
1) add Soda lime to test tubes. This absorbs the CO2 produced by the respiring woodlice in the experiment
2) cotton wall ball placed Above soda limes , glass beads in other test tubes are control tube
3) then set up respirometer
4) syringe used to set fluid in the manometer to a level
5) left for set period in water of 15°C
6) this time decrease of air , as respiration of woodlice, no CO2 due to Soda Lime
7) reduces pressure in tube , causing the Liquid to move toward the test tube containing woodlice as they want more air
8) the distance moved is the used to calculate the volume of oxygen taken in by woodlice per min
9) repeat at different temps to see rate of reaction change
What must be ethical about this experiment?
Woodlice need air ad could die due t suffocation
