Circulatory System - Blood Vessels Flashcards
What are the three types of blood vessels?
Arteries - carry blood AWAY from the heart
Capillaries - involvement in the exchange of materials at tissues
Veins - carry blood TO heart
How do arteries carry blood under pressure?
Pumps blood out at high pressure so the walls are strong and elastic
The walls are thick (the lumen)
Contain thick muscles make them strong but elastic due to the stretch ability and spring back of the tubes
What are some properties of capillaries?
1) arteries go into capillaries.
2) really tiny
3) narrow so they can carry blood to every cell
4) permeable walls
5) supply food and oxygen , take away waste CO2
6) one cell thick , increases diffusion rate
What are properties of veins?
1) Capillaries join up to make veins
2) blood is lower pressure in veins , not as thick as artery
3) bigger lumen , help blood flow despite the low pressure
4) have valves to keep blood flowing the right way.
