Circulatory System - Blood Flashcards
How does the red blood cells carry oxygen?
The cells have large surface area No nucleus Haemoglobin Oxyhaemoglobin Biconcave disc
These are to carry more oxygen
Carry iron
Absorb oxygen
What do white blood cells defend against? And how?
They defend against infections, this happens when the white blood cells multiply to fight it off, so a blood test would have many white blood cells.
What are the two white blood cells?
Phagocytes - white blood cells that engulf microorganisms , phagocytosis
Lymphocytes - white blood cells that produce antibodies against microorganisms . They also produce antitoxins to neutralise any toxins produced by the microorganisms
How do platelets help clots?
No nucleus , stop microorganisms getting in,
A lack of these can cause excessive bleeding and bruising.
What is plasma?
Plasma makes the blood like a blood substance, it carries everything inside the bloodstream, including
Red and white blood cells Platelets Glucose Amino acids Carbon dioxide Urea Hormones Proteins Antibodies Antitoxins
