why would you intubate a patient?
A
to maintain the airways to prevent aspiration pneumonia prevents laryngospasms reduces environmental pollution allows IPPV

how do you intubate?
A
- assistance to hold the head up
- make sure that the animal is asleep
- make sure you can see the glottis
- insert the tip and rotate
- topical anaesthetic
- check the placement and secure
- inflate the cuff

how would you check if the ET tube is in the correct place?
A
palpate the trachea auscultate the lung field observe the reservoir bag check for air movement capnogram

disadvantages of intubating?
A
if the tube is too small there is an increase in resistance kinks and occlusions trauma to the larynx irritation to the mucosa over inflating the cuff misplacement

explain the cuff on a ET tube
A
high volume, low pressure cuff which is a safety consideration.
this is to minimise the trachea wall or the mucosa of the trachea becoming damaged or ruptured.

explain the purpose of the murphy’s eye
A
it is a safety consideration as it prevents the complete obstruction of the patients airways
