inhalation agents Flashcards
what problems would you use pure o2 on an animal?
anaemia
pulmonary pathology
hypoventilation
recovering from N2O
why would you use oxygen as a carrier gas?
it doesn’t depress ventilation
doesn’t cause toxic nervous
doesn’t cause pulmonary changes
why would you use nitrous oxide as a carrier gas?
it is odourless
non-irritant
has analgesic properties
advantages of using inhalation agents
the depth can be altered
when you alter it, it will occur rapidly
it is eliminated through the lungs
disadvantages of using inhalation agents
can be hazardous
need to have a anaesthetic machine and the correct equipment
need to have knowledge about he agent and the circuit that is being used
induction/recovery period can be delayed depending on the function of the lungs
what inhalation agents are used?
isoflurane
sevoflurane
what are the properties of isoflurane?
good muscle relaxant good analgesic fast recover CNS depression poorly tolerated if you mask an animal due to the smell
what are the properties if sevoflurane?
non-irritant to the airways
similar cardio-pulmonary effects as iso
hypotension
very little liver metabolism
