Intrusive thoughts
Conscious, involuntary and unwanted thoughts was first explanation.
Now; Interruptive, salient, experienced mental events. this inlcudes positive intrusions but emphasizes on interuption.
the situation decides if it’s intrusive or not.
Typical content of intrusions
Past and future emotional events
Unsolved problems/tasks (tip of the tongue)
Uncertain events (obsessive compulsive)
Frequent stimuli (song stuck in head)
Images
Representations and the sensory information without direct external stimuli. Strong link to emotions. Think of the ratattoui moment
Associated cues
Thoughts seem to come from nowhere, but often triggered;
external cues: sight, sound smell etc
Internal cues’ mood, physiology
Probability of intrusions increases with diminished cognitive control, like lack of sleep
