Extinction + relapse effects Flashcards
Extinction
Unlearning fears, CS without the shock. Slowly extinct fear reaction *need a lot of unpaired repetition
Spontaneous recovery
Couple hours after extinction: Small fear reaction
Sign. time after extinction: Spontaneous recovery of fear (wo new experience)
Reinstatement effect
Presenting unsignaled shock after extinction: fear is back. US can be any fearful response to anything.
Renewal effect
Acquisition context in different location. Persistence of extinction in certain contexts. If you treat extinction in a lab, can be back in place where fear was acquired.
Explanation of relapse
Fear memory resurfaces bc:
The initial memory still exists, but an inhibitory memory is formed from hippocamp to vmPFC
The fear memory in the amygdala may resurface
Re-acquisition
New fear learning experience of the original CS-US pairing or similar context.
