introductory concepts Flashcards
pharmacokinetics
study of what the body does to the drug (metabolism and excretion)
pharmodynamics
study of what the drug does to the body (side effects and outcomes)
half life
the time required for 50% of the drug to be broken down and excreted
metabolism
how the drug is broken in the body to be used (liver)
excretion
elimination of med from the body (kidneys)
agonist
direct binding to a receptor to carry out the wanted response (lock and key fit)
antagonist
binds to a receptor site to prevent other agonists from binding (i.e. naloxone for opiates)
onset of action
how fast a drug takes to begin to work
peak action
maximum therapeutic effects; when the drug works the best
duration of action
total amount of time it takes for a drug to give the therapeutic response without repeating a dose
therapeutic effect
intended use of the drug; expected outcome
side effect/ADRs
predictable, sometimes undesirable, effects that may or may not occur with administration
what tests evaluate liver function?
ALT and AST
what tests evaluate kidney function?
BUN, creatinine clearance, GFR
peak
highest level of drug in the blood
