Plan-Do-Check-Act
Constructive Controversy
Appreciative Inquiry
Plan-Do-Check-Act
Circular process, happens on an ongoing basis
Plan: identify and analyze the problem
Do: develop solutions
Check: evaluate the results
Act: standardize the solution and adjust the solution as needed
The 5 WHYs
Can be used to identify the root cause(s) of a problem
Can help determine the reason the problem exists by asking “why” certain things have occurred
Generally, you should be able to reach the root cause(s) after asking a series of 5 whys, however, the number can vary depending on the situation
Appreciative Inquiry
Allows for flow of dialogue and understanding
Follows 5 Ds:
Define - what is the problem
Discover - sharing positive experiences related to the problem
Dream - sharing the ideal ways to improve what’s going right
Design - what steps can be taken to achieve the dream, create a “change proposal”
Destiny/Delivery - participants decide what and how they will contribute to the change proposal
Constructive Controversy
Linear in nature
Can be good for brainstorming sessions
Process: draw a conclusion, state your case, hear different conclusions, feel uncertain, search for better understanding
