Critical Thinking Strategies Flashcards
RED Strategy
Model based on 80+ years of research Fluid and sequential model RED stands for: R recognize assumptions E evaluate arguments D draw conclusions
RED Strategy
Recognize Assumptions
1st step of RED Strategy
Could be based on both our own assumptions and assumptions held by others involved
Learn to see gaps in logic, opinions disguised as facts
RED Strategy
Evaluate Arguments
2nd step of RED Strategy
Push away emotions and personal bias and analyze information accurately and objectively
Consider strategies individuals may use to disguise opinions as facts
Find out if there are ways to find out more information
RED Strategy
Draw Conclusions
3rd and final step of RED Strategy
This step flows naturally when the previous 2 steps are completed effectively
Reflect and determine whether the conclusions you draw are the result of logically following all available evidence (and are not based in emotion or opinion)
Be careful not to generalize beyond the evidence
RRA Strategy
Not as rigid, process-driven as RED Strategy
RRA stands for:
R reflect
R reasons
A alternatives
The steps are not necessarily linear but rather work together to form a conclusion
RRA Strategy
Reflect
Brainstorming phase
Avoid snap judgements
Reflect on the sources of information received (credibility)
RRA Strategy
Reasons
What evidence is there to support the facts/argument presented?
How does the source of information feel about the event/situation
Evidence, cold hard facts, proof
Consider human input (how you feel)
RRA Strategy
Alternatives
Are there alternative sources of evidence?
Are there alternative conclusions that can be drawn?
