Introduction to Organic Chemistry Flashcards
Hydrocarbon
Compound containing only carbon and hydrogen
Homologous Series
Series of compounds containing the same functional group and display similar chemical properties
Functional Group
Atom or group of atoms responsible for a compound’s chemical properties. Same functional group compounds will undergo similar reactions regardless of the size of the molecule it is part of
Emperical forumla
Simplest whole number ratio of atoms present in a compound
Isomer
Molecules with same structural formula but different arrangement of atoms
Structural isomer
Same molecular formula but different structural formula
Chain isomer
Different arrangements of carbon skeleton
Positional isomer
Same arrangement of carbon skeleton, functional group is attached to a different carbon
Functional group isomer
Same atoms arranged different to give a different functional group- different physical and chemical properties
Stereoisomer
Same structural formula but different arrangement of atoms in space
E-Z isomerism
Form of stereoisomerism that occurs due to restricted rotation around C=C double bond
CIP Priority rules
On each carbon on the double bond, group with the highest atomic number is given priority, lowest atomic number given lowest priority
