Introduction to motivation Flashcards
motivation: def
influences that account for the initiation, intensity, direction and persistence of a behaviour
motivation as an intervening variable
it is a mental process - can’t be observed, only inferred
interconnects many stimuli with many responses
four sources of motivation?
cognitive
social
physiological
emotinoal
describe instinct doctrine
we are motivated by instincts
critically evaluate instinct doctrine.
humans have few if any fixed action patterns (instincts). even though babies could arguably have instincts, they’re modal action patterns (still can have different responses to the same stimuli)
describe incentive theory
rewards and puunishments motivate us
describe arousal theory
motivated to achieve a baseline level of arousal, which is specific to the indiviudal.
too high - seek to reduce arousal.
too low - seek to increae arousal.
describe drive reduction.
we have needs: changes to homeostasis
we rectify these changes through drives.
this results in the drie being reduced.
what are sexual scripts
patterns of behaviour leading to sex
