Q

What was the relationship between the church and the Italian state like c1911? Why?

A

There was a long-term feud between the church and the state because the pope had been forced to give up land in during the process of unification. So much so, that the church forbade Catholics to stand in elections and highly disapproved of voting.

Q

What was Italy’s international status like c1911? Why?

A

They were seen as weak and had little to no influence. This was because they had few colonies and had suffered a humiliating defeat by the Abyssinians at Adowa in 1896.

17
Q

Why was Italy’s defeat at Adowa so humiliating?

A

At this point in time, Europeans (Italians included) saw themselves as better than Africans, so to be beaten so thoroughly would have made the Italians look weak.
