Introduction to Immunology Flashcards
Immunology
the defense of the body against invading microbes
3 Major Lines of Defense
Physical Barriers
Innate Immunity- rapid defenses
Adaptive Immunity- slow but highly effective and improves with time
Cellular Innate Immunity
cellular mechanisms by which protective cells attack
invaders
Humoral Innate Immunity
soluble molecules attack invaders
Cell-Mediated Adaptive Immunity
intracellular invaders. Involves T lymphocytes- recognize antigen- proliferates helper T cell or CTL
Humoral Adaptive Immunity
extracellular invaders. Involves B lymphocytes- proliferate- plasma cells produce immunoglobin
Lysozyme
in human tears, kills gram-positive bacteria
Examples of Physical Barriers
Cilia move mucous upward, coughing and sneezing, vomiting, urine flow
