- Term is derived from French word HOSPES.
- Hospes means HOST.
- The latin word “hospitals” means GUEST.
- All hospital employees are HOSTS OR HOSTESS.
- Patients are GUESTS.
How are hospitals supported?
- Patients are paying guests via

c. government (Medicare/Medicaid) - If patients are unable to pay or do not have insurance

a. Proprietary Hospitals: For-Profit

b. Private Voluntary Non-For-Profit hospitals:
Usually, community or church affiliated

Are public hospitals controlled by:
1. Federal Government – Northport VA Medical Center
2. State - New York State Psychiatric Institute
3. County - Nassau University Medical Center

c. Specialized:
Some hospitals specialize in the treatment of Patients.

Such hospitals are usually rehabilitation centers.
e. Hospices:
These facilities are concerned with terminally ill patients.
