Introduction to Genetics Flashcards
What are the 3 causes of disease?
1) Genetic e.g. Downs
2) Multifactorial e.g. Diabetes (Developed countries)
3) Environmental e.g. poor diet (underdeveloped)
What is the Genotype?
Genetic constitution of an individual
What is the Phenotype?
Appearance of individual from interaction with genotype and environment
What is an allele?
One of several alternative forms of a gene at a specific locus
What is polymorphism?
Frequent hereditary variations at a locus
Definition between Homozygous and Heterozygous?
Homozygous Both alleles at locus are same
Definition of Hemizygous?
Only one allele (Locus on X in male)
Classifications of Genetic Disease? (3)
1) Chromosomal: (altered number/structure)
2) Mendelian (Single genetic variable)
3) Non-Traditional
Autosomal Dominant Inheritance?
Disease which manifests itself in Heterozygous state
X-Linked recessive inheritance?
Pathogenic variants in genes on the X Chromosome
Why are mitochondria inherited from mothers?
Bulky organelle so can only fit inside eggs
What are multifactorial conditions?
Diseases due to combination of genetic and environmental factors
