Introduction to Bones Flashcards
Osseous Tissue
Dense bone that forms the outer layer of a bone
Compact bone
Osseous Tissue
Cancellous bone that contains a meshwork of thin trabeculae or spicules of bone tissue; it is found in the epiphyses and metaphyses of long bones.
Spongy bone
Long Bones
The shaft of the bone
Diaphysis
Long Bones
An exapanded area of bone found at either end end a bone that is covered by articular cartilage
Proximal/distal epiphyses
Long Bones
Lies between the diaphysis and epiphysis; it is a conical region adjacent to the area where active bone growth will occur.
Proximal/distal metaphyses
Long Bones
The central portion of the shaft of many bones, it contains stem cells that produce blood cells.
Marrow (medullary) cavity
Osseous Tissue
Cells that form new bone by laying down osteoid.
Osteoblasts
Osseous Tissue
Mature bone cells, formerly osteoblasts, that become surrounded by bone matrix and are responsible for maintaining bone matrix
Osteocytes
Osseous Tissue
Large cells that enzymatically dissolve bone matrix and are commonly found at sites of active bone remodeling.
