Identify the vertebrae
1. Ventral body: Small; oval; curved faces
2. Vertebral foramen: Large
3. Spinous process: long; split; tip points inferiorly
4. Transverse process: has transverse forame
5. Functions: Supports the skull, stabilizes relative positions of brain and spinal cord, allow controlled head movement.

Identify the vertebrae
1. Ventral body: Medium; heart-shaped; flat faces; facets for rib articulations
2. Vertebral foramen: Smaller
3. Spinous process: Long; slender; not split; tip points inferiorly
4. Transverse process: All but two have facets for rib articulations
5. Functions: Support weight of head, neck, upper limbs, organs, of thoracic cavity; articulate with ribs to allow changes in volume of thoracic cage.
