Basic approach to crime and punishment
an individuals actions are shaped by broad social forces, motives and opportunities
what caused crime?
The criminal may be driven to crime by lack of opportunities, or certain behaviour may be stigmatized as ‘crime’
What will reduce crime?
Social programs might improve situation so people don’t need to turn to crime
sociological imagination
an ability to see one’s situation in context as a whole
C. Wright Mills’ definition of sociological imagination
ability to interpret an individual’s experience in a broader social context, and to distinguish individual from social factors.
Cultural aspect of individual action
-Shared set of symbols, norms, values and beliefs common to all members of society and often taken for granted by its members.
social relationship
the socially defined connection between two or more individuals, which set the terms on which they interact
what does it mean by sociology is a social science?
It means that it aims at some kind of systematic reliable, objective knowledge about society, tat is obtained through studies and tests.
3 forms of sociological quantitative evidence
- statistics about social groups as a whole(eg. population, mean income,, unemployment rates.
- Obtained by broad-level surveys or measurements of objective factors
- displays general trends in society, and gives a good indication of broad trend.
3 forms of sociological qualitative evidence
- cultural beliefs or practices, seen in documents, words, actions, rites etc.
- obtained by direct observation of interactions, or by interviews
- Tells us about the ways society can be seen at the individual level (eg. how interactions take place.)
