Introduction Flashcards
what are the definitions of
mental health
mental illness
mental disorder
mental health
the mental state that the person is in to due with daily stressors in their life
mental illness
clinically diagnostic disorders that are significantly interfering with the person’s emotional, social and cognitive abilities
mental disorder
clinically diagnosable symptoms that are disturbing the patient’s life
usually (but not always, and also depending on the variety and the severity) creating distress and disabilities of the patient
(however, expected and socially accepted emotion reactions do not count as mental disorders)
what are the three disorder classification approaches
categorical
putting disorders in different categories, therefore there is no overlapping (used by the DSM-V)
advantages
> easier to make dichotic decisions
> also easier for clinical and administrative purposes
dimensional
using a scale
for developing treatment-like symptoms
hybrid
integrating categorical and dimensional
What is the diagnostic procedure with the DSM-V
based on four elements
clinician assessment
clinician interview
text descriptions
diagnostic criteria
procedure
setting the boundary for no disorder (normal grief vs depression)
identifying the primary disorder
multiple diagnoses possible
adding specifiers and subtypes
What are the different models of psychopathology
Psychoanalytic
Behavioural
Cognitive
Biopsychosocial
> combining biological, psycho and social factors
data-driven models
using data collected from a person, then compare the data with others to spot for any potential hazard (therefore can give early treatments)
normative statistical modelling
Research Domain Criteria Model (RDoc)
> vs DSM-V: one focuses only on the signs and symptoms, while RDoc also looks at the underlying factors (e.g., social and biological)
what are the 4ps in the biopsychosocial model
Protecting
> factors that reduces the likelihood of having mental illness
Predisposing
> factors that lead to increases the susceptibility of mental illness
Precipitating
> immediate factors that increases the susceptibility of mental illness
Perpetuating
> factors that contribute to the ongoing of mental illness
