What is a Nutrient?
A nutrient is a chemical that we ingest that provides nourishment. It is any of the substances we eat that help us to maintain life,
What does essential mean?
Essential means that we cannot create it within the body. We need to eat it.
What are Macros?
Nutrients needed in larger amounts. These provide our body with energy. Carbs, proteins, fats and alcohol.
What are Micronutrients?
Organic and inorganic compounds. Vitamins and minerals. These are essential.
What is a Carbohydrate?
Hydrated carbon. Hydrogen, Carbon and Oxygen. Examples include Bread, pasta, rice.
What is Protein?
Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen but also nitrogen. Sources of protein are meats, dairy, nuts and eggs.
What is a Lipid?
A lipid is a fatty acid. Triglycerides, phospholipids and sterols.
What is the gold standard in Nutrition Research?
Clinical Trials
What is a confounder?
A variable that confuses and outcome.

Prospective Cohort Study
Compare different populations at the same point in time?
Cross Sectional Study
What does In Vitro mean?
Outside of an organism. Ie. Test tube studies
What is placebo?
Placebo is when the participants of a study are given an inactive treatment but they still report changes as they have a belief in the treatment.
What does statistical significance mean?
That there is sufficient statistical evidence that the results are not due to chance.
