Digestion of Macros Flashcards
Macro digestion in Mouth?
Mechanical and chemical digestion of carbs and fats.
Salivary amylase breaks down starch and release of lingual lipase to begin to break down lipids
What are the chemicals/enzymes responsible for digestion in the stomach?
Gastrin, HCL, Pepsin and Gastric Lipase .
Primary carbohydrate digesting enzyme?
Pancreatic alpha amylase
Primary protein digesting enzyme?
Proteases
Primary lipid digesting enzyme?
Pancreatic Lipase
What is a probiotic?
It is live and colonises in the body
What is prebiotic?
Stimulates growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria.
Define passive transport
Transport that doesn’t require energy and moves with the concentration gradient
Define endocytosis
The engulfing of particles to be taken into the cell
Type I diabetes is when…?
Not enough insulin is produced meaning that glucose is not able to be taken up.
Type II diabetes is when…?
The body has developed a resistance to insulin and very little is taken up.
What is the role of insulin?
To bind to receptors and allow glucose to be taken up.
